How to Unlock Your Inner Energy with Jayne Ellis
Edited by Victoria Smart
The pace and pressure of modern life can create physical, mental, emotional, and energetic blocks, preventing us from aligning with our greatest potential. So, how do we awaken our spiritual energy, access our true power and unlock a more expansive version of ourselves?
Kundalini Yoga teacher and wellness guide, Jayne Ellis, shares her insights on the transformative practice of Kundalini Yoga…

What is Kundalini Yoga?
Kundalini Yoga is an ancient and transformational practice designed to awaken a powerful spiritual energy — known as kundalini. Through a dynamic combination of movement, breath, mantra, and meditation, the practice prepares the body and mind for this dormant energy to awaken.
As the kundalini awakens, we awaken — to our true power, our potential, and the deep intelligence within us. It’s renowned for bringing about rapid, lasting transformation — helping people let go of long-held stress, painful emotions, and awaken a clearer connection to their soul’s wisdom and purpose.
How does the practice differ from other types of Yoga?
Kundalini Yoga is a total playground of multidimensional yogic styles. A typical session weaves together breathwork, dynamic movement, mantra, and meditation — all designed to create an energetic shift from within. Unlike many yoga styles, we practice with the eyes closed. This helps turn the focus inward, softens the ego, and dissolves the habit of comparing ourselves to others. It creates a deeper and often profound experience of the inner self.
We also chant mantra, play music, and do serious breathwork — one student called it “Olympic standard”! And there are no sun salutations or headstands, which are often a mainstay in other forms of yoga. But the biggest difference is that Kundalini doesn’t require flexibility or physical perfection. It’s about going deeper — clearing emotional blocks, rewiring subconscious patterns, and reconnecting you to your soul. Even total beginners feel a shift in mood, clarity, or energy after just one class.
What are the core components of a typical Kundalini Yoga Kriya and what are their interconnected roles?
A Kundalini session begins by tuning into the inner self through mantra, followed by a gentle warm-up to activate the body and get the energy flowing. Then we move into a kriya — a specific sequence of postures, movement, breathwork, mantra, and mudra — with each element working together to shift energy, clear emotional and energy blocks and elevate consciousness.
There are thousands of Kundalini kriyas, each with a unique focus — from cultivating intuition and accessing creativity – to promoting clarity or emotional elevation. There’s even a kriya to clear ancestral karmas — during which nearly everyone ends up in tears! We typically close with a period of deep relaxation, after which the body and mind are primed for meditation. Kundalini meditations are among the most powerful tools I’ve encountered — helping students move beyond the chatty mind and access deep clarity and expanded states of consciousness.
How important is the concept of “energy” or “Kundalini energy” within the practice?
It’s fundamental — the whole practice is designed to prepare students for a Kundalini awakening. Kundalini is a divine force we all possess, but for most, it lies dormant at the base of the spine. Kundalini Yoga helps create a readiness for this powerful energy to rise.
As the energy awakens, it brings deep healing — dissolving any blocks we might be holding physically, mentally, emotionally, or energetically. Students begin to move past long-held trauma, painful emotions, and ancestral imprints — anything that’s been blocking them from realising their true power. As the kundalini ascends, it unlocks higher states of consciousness, deeper creativity, and a sense of divine connection. This is why it’s often called our “untapped human potential” — it opens us to who we’re truly meant to be, and life begins to transform in incredible ways.
How can Kundalini Yoga optimise our wellbeing — physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually?
It’s one of the few practices I’ve found that genuinely addresses all layers of being — not as an idea or simply a concept, but as a lived experience. These days, a sharp mind or strong body simply isn’t enough — without a connection to spirit or purpose, life feels unsteady. Kundalini balances every part of our being, and it doesn’t just manage symptoms — it works at the root.
Physically, the practice of Kundalini Yoga is incredibly beneficial for our glandular health, which is increasingly under attack through our modern way of living. The practice uses dynamic breathwork, which helps boost circulation and aids detoxification.
Mentally, it clears subconscious patterns, reduces overthinking, and builds resilience. Emotionally, it helps process pain and regulate the nervous system — particularly valuable in times of stress or burnout.
Spiritually, it reconnects us with our true self, intuition, and deeper purpose.
Beyond the physical postures, what is the role of mantra and sound current in this practice?
Mantra is a vital part of Kundalini Yoga. The ancient mantras in Kundalini are more than chanted words — they contain specific sound codes that alter brain chemistry and energetic frequency. Chanting these mantras not only helps regulate breath and calm the nervous system, but also entrains the mind to a more coherent, elevated state.
In this practice, we immerse ourselves in mantra — listening, chanting, even playing it softly as we sleep — with the intention that its elevated vibration infuses our being. So that no matter where we are or what we’re doing, we’re vibrating at our highest possible frequency — and naturally attracting greater levels of health, wealth, and happiness.
In my teaching, mantra is one of the most beloved aspects — it offers emotional release, heart expansion, and often a powerful sense of connection. For me, the sacred sound current is a medicine in itself.
For those who are new to this practice, or to yoga in general, how do you advise getting started?
Start with an open mind and a willing heart. You don’t need to be flexible or know anything in advance — just turn up and breathe. The magic of Kundalini Yoga is that just one practice can shift your state. And if you want to experience the deeper, transformative layers of the practice, joining a Kundalini retreat is an incredible way to immerse yourself and access expanded states that are often harder to reach in everyday life.
And now a little more about you…
What does being ‘well’ mean to you?
To me, wellness means living in alignment — with my body, my values, and my truth. It’s the ability to have space in my life, so I can create freely, rest when needed, and hold steady in the unknown.
It’s not about perfection — it’s about living with a sense of ease and grace, no matter what might be going on in my world.
What inspired you to change paths and become a Kundalini Yoga teacher? What drew you to this specific practice over other forms?
We have a saying: “You don’t find Kundalini — it finds you!”
Kundalini Yoga found me at a time when I was craving something deeper. I felt like something was missing in my life, but I had no real idea what that thing was. I’d explored other forms of yoga, but nothing worked as quickly or as deeply to create such a profound spiritual connection — which I can only describe as phenomenal.
My journey began back in 2010 — I went on a Kundalini Yoga retreat that completely changed the course of my life. I remember we danced, chanted, meditated — and I had huge emotional releases, moments of bliss, deep clarity, and powerful surges of energy through my body. It was a profound spiritual awakening.
When I got back to London, life really started to shift. The things that once drained me began to fall away effortlessly. I was vibrating at a new frequency, and those old, toxic people and situations simply couldn’t reach me anymore. That retreat showed me just how good it was possible to feel — and I knew I had to share this powerful practice. That’s why I now host Kundalini Yoga retreats around the world — because I know first-hand, how this practice truly transforms lives.
Are there any particular Kriyas or meditations you find yourself returning to again and again, and why?
Yes — I often return to the Kriya for Conquering Imagined Disabilities. So many of our limitations are just fabrications of the mind, and sometimes I need a practice to remind me of that!
But – the one I come back to the most is the Meditation to Trigger the Positive Mind. It never fails to amaze me how quickly it opens the inflow of energy that is trying to come our way — but that, so often, unconsciously block.
The first time I committed to it for just one week, I had my highest-ever earning day!! One of my 1:1 students received a huge, unexpected tax rebate. Another got a call from a casting agent out of the blue. It’s simple, but it works. When I feel scattered or stuck, this meditation brings me back to centre and helps me realign with what’s already wanting to find me. It’s one of the most potent tools I know — and it’s up on my YouTube channel if you’re curious to try it.
What is the most profound lesson or realisation Kundalini Yoga has gifted you, either personally or through your teaching?
Kundalini Yoga didn’t just open a portal — it showed me that what we call “reality” is only a sliver of what’s truly available.
In one early experience, I felt myself dissolve into a vast field of intelligence that felt more real than anything I’d known. When I came back, I realised I’d spent most of my life outsourcing power — striving, overgiving, hoping I would get something back in return which made me feel safe, loved or valued.
The most profound realisation? I am the doorway. I am the source. And so are you. Everything we seek is already encoded in us — but we must stop chasing and start listening. I see this land most deeply on retreat. One woman brought her Brazilian mother, a total sceptic — during a third eye practice she saw past lives, received spiritual visitations, and said it was the most meaningful spiritual experience of her life. Others launch businesses, see colours, access other realms, and receive messages. It’s not rare — it’s just the power of this work. It reminds us to relax, tune in, and remember how phenomenal we truly are.
