Longevity has become one of wellness’ biggest buzzwords, with an ever-growing landscape of supplements, diagnostics and regenerative treatments promising to change not only how long we live, but how well. Yet meaningful longevity isn’t simply about extending lifespan – it’s about protecting our healthspan: the years we remain strong, sharp, active and independent. So, beyond the trends and quick fixes, what does it really take to age well?

Longevity has become one of wellness’ biggest buzzwords. What does it actually mean to you?

To me, longevity isn’t about simply living longer – it’s about living better for longer. The goal is to maximise healthspan, which is the number of years we remain physically active, mentally sharp and free from chronic disease. True longevity means maintaining energy, resilience and independence well into later life, rather than just adding years to life.

What are the biggest misconceptions you see people making when it comes to optimising their health and extending their healthspan?

One of the biggest misconceptions is that longevity can be achieved through a single supplement, treatment or quick fix. In reality, healthy ageing is built on consistent habits alongside personalised medical care. Sleep, nutrition, movement and stress management remain the foundations, while advanced therapies should enhance – not replace – those essentials.

Many people are now talking about biological age rather than chronological age. What is the difference, how is biological age measured, and why do you believe it’s a more meaningful indicator of long-term health?

Chronological age is simply the number of birthdays you’ve had. Biological age reflects how well your cells and organs are actually functioning. We measure it using biomarkers such as inflammation, metabolic health, body composition and increasingly epigenetic testing, which looks at patterns of DNA methylation linked to ageing. Two people may both be 55 chronologically, but biologically one could resemble someone in their forties while the other may have the physiology of someone much older. That’s why biological age often provides a more meaningful picture of future health and disease risk.

Regenerative medicine is transforming the longevity conversation. How do you see regenerative therapies changing the future of preventative healthcare?

For decades, medicine has largely focused on treating disease after it develops. Regenerative medicine shifts that mindset towards preserving function and supporting the body’s natural repair mechanisms before significant decline occurs. I believe we’ll increasingly intervene earlier, helping people maintain healthier tissues, better mobility and stronger cognitive function long before disease develops.

Exosome therapy is one of the most talked-about innovations in regenerative medicine. What are exosomes, and what role do you believe they can play in supporting longevity?

Exosomes are tiny messenger particles that are naturally released by our cells. I often use the analogy that if stem cells are the aircraft carrier, exosomes are the fighter jets. They carry highly targeted biological messages, delivering proteins, lipids and bioactive molecules that enable cells to communicate with one another. This cell-to-cell signalling helps coordinate processes such as tissue repair, inflammation and regeneration. While research is still evolving, exosomes are one of the most exciting developments in regenerative medicine because they harness and enhance the body’s own healing mechanisms, rather than simply treating symptoms.

If someone wanted to invest in their long-term health, where would you tell them to start?

Start by understanding your baseline. Comprehensive health assessments, blood biomarkers and body composition analysis can identify risks years before symptoms appear. Once you know where you stand, you can make targeted lifestyle changes that are far more effective than following generic health advice. Prevention is always more powerful than reacting after illness develops.

How important is personalised medicine in the future of longevity? Do you think the era of one-size-fits-all healthcare is coming to an end?

Absolutely. The era of one-size-fits-all healthcare is coming to an end because no two people age in exactly the same way. We all have different genetics, lifestyles, medical histories and nutritional needs, so what benefits one person may be ineffective, or even counterproductive, for another.

I see many people spending hundreds of pounds on supplements simply because they’re trending on social media, often taking large combinations without knowing whether they actually need them. More isn’t always better. Some supplements can compete for absorption, interact with medications or even work against one another, while taking excessive doses of certain vitamins and minerals can have negative health effects.

Personalised medicine allows us to move away from guesswork. By using advanced diagnostics and biomarkers, we can identify genuine deficiencies, understand an individual’s biology and recommend targeted interventions that are far more likely to deliver meaningful benefits. The future of longevity isn’t about taking more supplements – it’s about taking the right ones, in the right combinations, for the right person.

What role do biomarkers, advanced testing and diagnostics play in helping people make more informed decisions about their health?

They provide objective insights into what’s happening beneath the surface, often years before symptoms appear. Biomarkers can reveal inflammation, metabolic dysfunction, hormonal changes or cardiovascular risk long before disease develops. This allows clinicians to create highly personalised interventions and monitor whether those strategies are actually improving health over time.

Which developments in longevity science or regenerative medicine are you most excited about over the next five to ten years, and why?

I’m particularly excited by the convergence of regenerative medicine, artificial intelligence and precision diagnostics. We’ll be able to identify disease risk earlier, monitor biological ageing more accurately and tailor therapies to each individual with far greater precision. Advances in cellular therapies and regenerative biologics also have the potential to transform how we manage age-related decline.

If you could change one thing about the way people think about ageing, what would it be?

I’d like people to stop seeing ageing as something that simply happens to them and something they fear. While we can’t stop the passage of time, we can influence how well we age. Many of the conditions we associate with ageing are influenced by lifestyle, early intervention and proactive healthcare. Ageing isn’t just about getting older, it’s about maintaining function and quality of life and enjoying each aspect of the journey. Ageing can, and should, be a beautiful thing.

On a more personal note, what’s one non-negotiable daily ritual that has the biggest impact on your health and wellbeing?

Protecting my sleep. Sleep is when the body repairs, regulates inflammation, consolidates memory and restores energy. No supplement or treatment can compensate for consistently poor sleep, so I prioritise it every day.

What’s one wellbeing habit you’ve adopted over the years that you wish you’d started sooner?

I have always had a passion for exercise and adventure and strength training is something that shouldn’t be overlooked. Maintaining muscle mass is one of the most effective ways to support healthy ageing, improving metabolic health, bone density, balance and independence later in life. It’s one of the best long-term investments anyone can make in their future health.
