Routes to a Brighter Smile with Dr Reena Wadia
Edited by Victoria Smart
A healthy smile is often seen as a reflection of overall well-being, but the truth is, oral health isn’t just a window to your body – it’s a vital gateway. So, how can we optimise our gum health, improve our oral hygiene and brighten our smile?
Periodontist and founder of RW Perio, Dr Reena Wadia, shares her tips…

As a Periodontist, what does being ‘well’ mean to you?
Being well is about balance – physically, mentally, and emotionally. It’s not just about absence of disease but having the energy, clarity, and confidence to live fully. For me, that starts with oral health, which has a profound ripple effect on overall wellbeing. When your mouth is healthy, you feel it everywhere.
What role does oral health place in our overall wellbeing – from physical wellness to mental health?
Oral health is intrinsically linked to overall health – it’s all connected. Inflammation in the gums has been linked to systemic issues like heart disease and diabetes. And on a more emotional level, a healthy smile can significantly impact self-esteem and confidence, which are key to mental wellbeing.
How do you support clients to improve their oral health in-clinic – from medical interventions to aesthetic treatments?
At RW Perio, we focus on both the science and the artistry of gum care – from treating advanced periodontal disease to enhancing gum aesthetics. Our approach is bespoke and thorough, always using the latest evidence-based techniques. We’re also passionate about educating our patients – empowering them with the knowledge and tools to continue their care at home.
What hi-tech treatments and techniques do you use to optimise your client’s oral health?
We really focus on precision and prevention – using advanced imaging, including digital X-rays and 3D scanning, to gain an in-depth understanding of a patient’s gum and bone health. Our microsurgical techniques (which involve using very fine, specialised equipment and precision techniques to achieve optimal results and speed up the recovery process) allow for minimally invasive treatment and optimal aesthetic outcomes. Every step is guided by evidence-based care and the latest in periodontal innovation – and we always tailor it to the individual.
What are your thoughts on at-home oral health technologies – such as an electric toothbrush or jet-wash flossing?
These tools can be game-changers – but only if used correctly and consistently. I always recommend an electric toothbrush with a pressure sensor, as it’s clinically proven to be more effective at plaque removal. Water flossers are great for patients with orthodontic appliances or dexterity issues – although these shouldn’t completely replace traditional interdental cleaning.
Can you explain the benefits of tongue scraping?
Tongue scraping is a simple yet transformative step in any oral care routine. Your tongue has an irregular surface full of cracks and crevices where extra bacteria and debris can get trapped. Like a carpet, it needs to be cleaned regularly. This is where the tongue scraper comes in. A tongue scraper is a simple tool, usually made from plastic or metal, that is dragged along your tongue to remove a large bulk of the bacteria and toxins that accumulate overnight – helping prevent bad breath, promoting fresh breath, and supporting the oral microbiome. It’s also incredibly satisfying – once you start, you won’t stop!
To use safely, stick your tongue out, apply gentle pressure, and repeat the motion 4-8 times – rinsing the scraper between strokes. Always clean the tool and store it dry after use. Done daily after brushing, tongue scraping leaves your mouth feeling fresher and noticeably cleaner.
When it comes to teeth whitening – what can we do in the clinic, and from home, to lift the shade of our smile?
Home whitening prescribed by a dental professional is the most predictable way to whiten your teeth. The personalised process begins with a thorough consultation to confirm suitability, followed by an advanced hygienist appointment and scans to create custom trays – which are received by the patient, alongside their whitening kit, two weeks later. A follow-up appointment is essential to review progress, make any necessary adjustments and ensure best results without adverse side effects. If you’re wanting to uphold optimal results, avoid staining foods and drinks, like coffee and red wine, and maintain excellent oral hygiene – it will make a big difference!
What can we do from the comfort of our home to protect, and improve, our oral health?
Follow a consistent, effective oral care regime: use an electric toothbrush twice a day, floss or use interdental brushes daily, scrape your tongue, and nourish your mouth with products like The Mouth Cleanse By Dr Reena. Hydration, a balanced diet, and limiting sugar also play a big part.
Why? When your teeth are repeatedly exposed to sugar throughout the day bacteria is produced, which puts you at high risk of causing tooth decay. To mitigate the impact of sugar, aim to reduce how often you consume sugary snacks and drinks, follow with something neutralising (such as a small cube of cheese) and rinse with a fluoride mouthwash to help re-mineralise and protect enamel.
Now a little about yourself – how do you support your own wellbeing?
My wellbeing routine starts early – I’m a proud member of the “5am Club”! I begin the day with movement, a plant-based breakfast, and time with my daughter, which grounds me. I protect my energy with regular workouts, nourishing food, and quiet rituals like skincare and reading. Family is everything – my biggest source of joy and strength.
What is your idea of a perfect morning?
I start with a shower and my oral care regime using the By Dr Reena Tongue Scraper and Lip Balm – they’re my non-negotiables. Then it’s a nourishing vegan breakfast, ideally shared with my daughter Riya in our kitchen. I feel very privileged to now be in my Mama era, and those slow, meaningful moments are what I treasure most.
If I’m in Central London, a breakfast meeting at Maison Estelle or Home House is always a welcome treat – I find those environments inspiring and energising. I also like to fit in a personal training session – in my field, it’s essential to take care of yourself so you can take care of others. Then it’s off to 75 Harley Street, my natural habitat and the home of RW Perio, where I’m fortunate to lead an incredible team at the forefront of specialist gum care.
